Step 1: Measure your electricity use on an average day

Take a reading of your electricity use from your meter box (reading 1) note the time and take a reading 24 hours later (reading 2).

Subtract reading one from reading two and you are left with the number of kWhs used per day on an average day.

The average Australian Household consumption is approximately 16kWh per day.

Step 2: Find your baseline 

To find your electricity usage baseline you will need to enlist the help of everyone in your household, or pre-warn them. Better still, plan a nice day out. To find your baseline reading you need to turn off all electrical appliances except for anything essential for 24 hours.

Take a reading of your electricity use from your meter box (reading 1) note the time, do not use anything but essential items for the next 24 hours and then take (reading 2) from your meter.

Subtract reading one from reading two and you are left with the number of kWhs used on your baseline day.

Step 3: Find those energy hungry appliances

Check your electricity bill to see how much you pay per unit for your electricity.

If your air conditioner uses 1200watts of power per day then:

1200*4 hours 4.8kWh per day
4.8kWh*.26*90 days $112.32

As you can see, if you run your air conditioner for only four hours during the hottest three months in Summer, it will hit your back pocket!
